Description
This easy Crockpot Bread recipe yields a soft and flavorful loaf with minimal effort. Perfect for those who want fresh homemade bread without an oven! The slow cooker ensures a perfectly tender inside, and an optional broiler step creates a crisp, golden crust.
Ingredients
For the Bread:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour – The base of the bread, yielding a soft and tender loaf.
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons) – Helps the bread rise.
- 1 teaspoon salt – Enhances flavor and balances the taste.
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F/43°C) – Activates the yeast for proper fermentation.
- 2 tablespoons olive oil – Adds moisture and a rich flavor.
Optional Toppings:
- Fresh or dried herbs (rosemary, thyme, oregano) – Adds aroma and extra taste.
- Seeds (sesame, poppy, sunflower) – For added crunch and nutrition.
- Grated cheese – Creates a deliciously cheesy crust.
Instructions
1️⃣ Prepare the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and yeast.
Gradually add warm water and olive oil, stirring with a wooden spoon or spatula.
Mix until a rough dough forms, then transfer to a lightly floured surface.
Knead for 8–10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
2️⃣ Let the Dough Rise:
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap.
Let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
3️⃣ Prepare the Crockpot:
Line the bottom of your slow cooker with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
Lightly grease the parchment paper or sprinkle with a little flour.
4️⃣ Shape and Add Toppings:
Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a round loaf.
Place it into the prepared crockpot.
Sprinkle with herbs, seeds, or cheese, if desired.
5️⃣ Cook the Bread:
Cover and cook on high for 2–2.5 hours.
The bread is done when the internal temperature reaches 190°F (88°C), the bottom is golden brown, and the loaf feels firm to the touch.
6️⃣ Crisp the Crust (Optional):
For a crispier crust, transfer the bread to a baking sheet.
Broil in the oven for 2–3 minutes, keeping a close eye to prevent burning.
7️⃣ Cool and Serve:
Let the bread cool on a wire rack for at least 20 minutes before slicing.
Enjoy warm with butter, jam, or your favorite spread!
Notes
- If using instant yeast, you can skip the proofing step and mix everything together right away.
- Flour substitution: Swap up to 1 cup of flour with whole wheat flour for a denser, more nutritious loaf.
- If your crockpot runs hot, check the bread at 1.5 hours to prevent overcooking.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
