Description

These Sausage Smash Burgers bring a bold twist to the classic smash burger by combining juicy Italian sausage and ground beef for an extra flavorful bite. Topped with melted cheddar, crisp lettuce, and a tangy mayo-mustard spread, these burgers are packed with deliciousness. Perfect for a cookout or a quick weeknight dinner!

Ingredients

Scale

For the patties:

  • 1 lb Italian sausage (mild or spicy, depending on preference)
  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

For assembly:

  • 4 hamburger buns (preferably brioche)
  • 1 cup lettuce, shredded
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
  • Pickles (optional, for garnish)

For the sauce:

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard

Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare the meat mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef and Italian sausage. Use your hands to gently mix until well combined. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and roll them into balls.

2️⃣ Preheat the grill or skillet: Heat a grill or large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. If using a skillet, add olive oil to prevent sticking.

3️⃣ Smash the patties: Once hot, place the meatballs onto the cooking surface. Using a flat spatula or burger press, smash each ball down to form a thin patty (about 1/2 inch thick). Season with salt and pepper.

4️⃣ Cook the patties: Let the patties cook for about 3-4 minutes on the first side, then carefully flip. Immediately sprinkle a generous handful of shredded cheddar cheese on each patty. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and the patties are nicely browned.

5️⃣ Toast the buns: While the patties finish cooking, slice the brioche buns in half and lightly toast them on the grill or skillet until golden brown.

6️⃣ Assemble the burgers: Spread mayonnaise and Dijon mustard on the bottom half of each bun. Place a cheesy sausage smash patty on top, followed by shredded lettuce, tomato slices, red onion, and pickles (if using). Cap it off with the top half of the bun.

7️⃣ Serve: Enjoy your Sausage Smash Burgers immediately while hot, served with fries, chips, or a fresh side salad!

Notes

  • Spicy Kick? Use hot Italian sausage and add a dash of hot sauce to the mayo-mustard spread.
  • Extra Crisp? Try adding crispy turkey bacon or frying the patties with a bit of butter for extra crunch.
  • Cheese Lovers? Swap cheddar for pepper jack, gouda, or Swiss for a different flavor twist.
